I’ve seen the way people order coffee on TV…I have no idea what they are saying, and I didn’t think this was a skill I needed to learn. Until I decided to treat my friend to a coffee.
This is me at Starbucks yesterday:
Me: I need 2 coffees
Barista: ok what size?
M: What size do you have?
B: tall, grande, and venti
M: Yeah I don’t know what that means. Can I get a visual?
B: (holds up cups) venti is 20 oz, grande is 16 oz, tall is 12 oz.
M: ok. I’ll take 2 of the 16 oz ones…I’m going to be that guy today. (Pull out a piece of paper with my notes) I need a pumpkin spice latte, made with skim milk, no whip, half the number of pumps as your normally use.
B: (somehow repeats my order but in “coffee talk”)
M: And the other one, regular coffee, the darkest roast you have, black.
My coffee orders are usually pretty simple. Black. Dark roast. Don’t have dark roast? Medium roast. Don’t have medium roast? I’ll take whatever house coffee you brewed today.
Why does coffee have to be so hard?
